Home Assistant automations

Your appliances run on the sun, by themselves

JBD Monitor tells Home Assistant when the battery fills up and when it runs low. Four simple rules, and the washing machine, the water heater and the car use your sun instead of the grid. Watch a day:

JBD data in your smart home

    Home Assistant

Set your MQTT broker in the box and Home Assistant discovers JBD Monitor: sensor.jbd_monitor_soc, voltage, current and power, sensor.jbd_monitor_cell_01_voltage and the following cells, sensor.jbd_monitor_cell_delta, sensor.jbd_monitor_temperature_1, sensor.jbd_monitor_cycles and binary_sensor.jbd_monitor_charge_mos with its discharge twin. No YAML.

No MQTT broker? Home Assistant’s REST integration can read the box’s local JSON API instead. Both work on a local network with no internet, in a van as in a house.

    MQTT

Readings on your broker are open to any client: Node-RED on a Raspberry Pi, a wall tablet, a data logger.

    Local JSON API

    GET http://moniwatt.local/api.json?key=YOUR_KEY

    { "soc": 72, "voltage": 53.1, "current": 6.4, "delta_mv": 5,
      "temps": [21.5, 22.0], "cycles": 143,
      "charge_mos": true, "discharge_mos": true, "protections": [] }

Copy the key from Settings > Access key & Cloud.

    Jeedom

A JSON plugin from the Market reads api.json; map soc, delta_mv, charge_mos and discharge_mos to commands, and raise an alert on any entry in protections.

    Node-RED

Poll api.json with an http request node and watch msg.payload.charge_mos and msg.payload.discharge_mos: a change from true to false is the moment the BMS protected the pack. An mqtt in node works too.

    Domoticz

Domoticz reads the box through its MQTT Auto Discovery gateway, or with a dzVents script polling api.json.

    openHAB

HTTP binding with JSONPATH channels such as $.soc and $.delta_mv, or the MQTT binding.

    IFTTT, Make and Apilio

With the free Cloud on and an internet link, IFTTT, Make.com or Apilio can read the private JSON link and bridge values into SmartLife or Tuya scenes. There is no native Tuya integration.

    Ideas for JBD owners

    • Get told, with the cell values, each time the BMS opens the charge or discharge MOS.
    • Switch off big loads before the lowest cell reaches the cut-off.
    • Send the surplus to the water heater when the pack is full.
    • Warm the pack before charging in winter.
    • Track the cycle count and the cell spread month after month.

    Questions about integrations

Do I need the Cloud for Home Assistant, Jeedom or Node-RED?

No. All of them read the box directly on your home network, through MQTT or the local JSON API. The Cloud is only for seeing your system from away, or for online services like IFTTT.

Where do I find my access key?

On the box’s page, Settings › Access key & Cloud. You can generate a new one at any time; the old one then stops working.

How often can I read the values?

The box keeps the latest reading, refreshed every few seconds. Polling every 30 to 60 seconds is plenty; MQTT pushes each new reading without polling.

Can an integration change my settings?

No. The box only reads your equipment: no command sent through MQTT or the API can change a setting.

Is there a Tuya or SmartLife integration?

Not natively. IFTTT, Make.com or Apilio can read the private JSON link of the free Cloud and trigger Tuya or SmartLife scenes.
